“You fucked her?” exclaimed Samantha, horror and disbelief clearly evident on her face. Running a hand through her hair, she got up from her bed and walked a few feet away, then spun on her heel. She glared at Jessica, eyebrows pulled down together, lips closed tightly, becoming thinner.

“Have – you – lost – your – fucking – mind?!” Sam spoke slowly, emphasizing each word, her voice thick with anger.

The joy Jess had felt only moments before was quickly dashed. She had expected a bit of flak from her best friend, but not this level of anger. She folded her hands in her lap and stared at the floor as Sam continued to rant.

“Sam, please…” Jessica’s voice cracked. She fought to hold back her tears. Her disappointment was quickly turning to anger of her own. Why was Sam acting like this? She should be a little bit happy for me, at least. She’s supposed to be my friend.

“Please, nothing. God Jess, what have you done? What has she done to you?” Sam demanded as she wiped at the tears streaming down her cheeks.

Jessica’s head snapped up. Her anger bubbled over. “She has done nothing I didn’t want!” she barked, her own tears now flowing unabated. “Why can’t you understand? Why can’t you just be happy for me?” Jessica yelled as she stood up, her fists balled at her sides. “I thought you were my friend, Sam!”

“I am your friend, Jess.” The volume of her voice lowered as she stepped closer, lifting a hand to touch Jessica’s arm.

Jessica pulled back, her face burning with anger. “Well, you have a funny way of showing it!” Moving quickly, she pushed past Sam and headed for the bedroom door.

“Jess. Please, wait.”

“Go to hell! And stay the fuck away from me!” Jessica threw open the door and stormed from the house.

Jessica took the long way home. She needed to calm herself before walking in the front door. If her mother saw her, there would be questions — questions she didn’t want to answer, questions she couldn’t answer, as the truth would ruin lives, hers included.

Walking along the darkened sidewalk, she felt the warm breeze kiss her cheek and dry the last of the tears. She wished Jill was here right now, holding her. She could go to Jill’s apartment, it wasn’t that far away, and she had a couple of hours before she had to be home. But that’s not what they had agreed on.

It had been just over a week since they first made love in Jill’s bed. They had discussed it, deciding that at school they had to maintain the facade of a typical teacher-student relationship. Jessica did just that, even though it drove her mad to sit and watch Jill teach her class and not be able to touch her.

So, they would meet after school. Jessica would take the bus home as usual and wait inside her house until the bus was gone and the other kids who got off at her stop were out of sight. Once she was satisfied that she wouldn’t be seen, she would hurry down the street and around the corner to where Jill was waiting in her car. Jill would drive them to a secluded spot where they wouldn’t be seen.

They would get into the large back seat of her SUV and talk, and kiss, and steam up the windows as they humped and fingered each other to climax over the next hour. Jessica would then hurry home after Jill dropped her off at their rendezvous point and get her chores done before her parents got home from work.

Jessica had been so happy and giddy all week. She just had to share it all with Sam. But now she realized that had been a mistake. Sam’s reaction had been over the top, Jessica thought, and it hurt. She wasn’t looking forward to seeing her in class tomorrow.

*****

Jessica was sitting in their usual seat on the bus the next morning. The same seat she and Samantha had sat in since school started last September. When Sam got on the bus and paused at the seat, Jessica just turned her head and looked out the window. She couldn’t stop Sam from sitting there if she wanted to, but she didn’t have to like it or pay any attention to her. After a few moments had passed and she didn’t feel the familiar bounce of someone sitting down, Jessica turned from the window. Sam was not there.

She felt her stomach knot. She was still pissed at Sam, but part of her ached for the familiarity of having her friend sitting beside her, just like she had done every school day for the last several years. Jessica turned back to the window as the bus lurched away from the curb.

Jessica’s mood improved when Jill walked into the classroom. Their eyes met, and Jess gave her a small smile.

Jill smiled back, but a look of concern quickly crossed her face. Jill had noticed the empty seat beside Jessica, the one that was Sam’s. After a quick scan of the students, Jill found Sam sitting at the back of the classroom. When Jill looked back at Jessica questioningly, Jessica shook her head slowly, her smile fading. How she wished she could just get up from the desk and into Jill’s embrace.

She had hoped to have a couple of minutes with Jill at the end of class, but when the buzzer rang, several students crowded around the teacher’s desk with questions about this or that. Disappointed, Jessica left the classroom. She spent the rest of the day in a funk, not paying much attention during her other classes, noting that Sam always sat in a different seat than she usually did during classes they shared, a seat that was not close to hers. Even at lunch in the cafeteria, Sam was nowhere to be seen. As upset as she was with Sam right now, Jessica missed her friend.

The day dragged. When the buzzer rang for the afternoon break, Jessica found herself in the girls’ restroom. As she stood at the sink, washing her hands, she stared at her own reflection. The door to the restroom opened. Jessica heard this more than saw it, and looked back at her hands. Behind her, the sound of stall doors being pushed open and closed echoed through the room. Looking up at the mirror, she saw Jill approaching her. Evidently she’d wanted to make sure they were alone.

Jessica quickly turned off the tap and spun toward Jill. Her heart sank as she watched her lover move toward the door. Jessica was just about to utter a protest when Jill stopped and locked the door. A little rush of excitement flashed through her, wondering what Jill was up to. But Jill wasn’t smiling, and she didn’t have that come-hither look in her eyes. A knot formed in Jessica’s stomach and she swallowed nervously.

“Jess, are you okay?” Jill asked, concern in her voice.

Jessica frowned. Jill must have noticed her less than cheery mood. “It’s Sam,” she sighed. “We had a fight.” Jessica was looking at the floor, kicking at something with the toe of her sneaker.

“Is that why she changed seats in class?”

Jessica nodded. “Yeah.”

Jill moved to stand closer. “Can I ask what the fight was about?”

Jessica wanted to hold the woman right now, but as she turned and raised her arms to do so, she realized that her hands were still wet from the sink. Stepping to the paper towel dispenser, she pulled a towel and dried her hands.

She walked back and wrapped her arms around Jill’s waist, resting her head on her shoulder. Jill brought her arms up and returned the embrace.

“It was about us,” Jess said quietly. As soon as the last word was out of her mouth, she felt Jill stiffen.

“Us? What do you mean, us?” Jill asked. The warmth had gone from her voice.

Jess pulled away and studied her teacher’s face. The concern she had seen there moments before had changed to worry. She was staring blankly into the corner of the room, chewing her lip.

“Please, Jill, don’t be mad. I trust Sam. She won’t tell, I promise.” Jessica said, desperate to put Jill at ease.

“Then why are you two fighting?”

Jessica felt Jill’s glare as much as saw it. Her voice was tinged with anger. The teenager’s lip trembled, tears welling in her eyes. “She… she thinks it’s a mistake. That, that I’ll get hurt and that you’ll go to jail or something.”

Jill pulled her into her arms. “You took a big risk, Jess. Let’s just hope you’re right about her,” she said quietly. “Now clean your face. It’s almost class time.”

Jessica did as she was asked. Glancing over at Jill, she could see the woman was tense, uneasy. Damn it. She’s mad at me. I hope I didn’t screw this up. When she was ready, Jill unlocked the door and, without speaking further, guided Jessica out with her hand on her lower back.

Standing just out of their view, a beautiful blonde girl in a cheerleader’s uniform watched Jessica and her teacher leave the restroom together. Her eyes narrowed, and her mouth formed a mischievous grin.

*****

With the school day over, Jess stopped at her locker and gathered what she would need to do her homework that evening. She was mildly surprised that Sam wasn’t at her own locker, which was beside Jessica’s. The good thing was that it would save her the awkwardness that would surely result from an encounter. Closing her locker, she headed for the bus.

As she walked down the hall, she passed two of the prissy cheerleaders that made up Becky Wilson’s posse. Normally they would just walk past, ignoring her. But today they looked at her, sneering, speaking to one another in hushed voices. Jessica was baffled but didn’t pay them any mind. They were airheads and would be lost if Becky were to ever cut them loose.

Passing through the main lobby, Jessica happened to glance over toward the central office area. She froze in her tracks, and her stomach lurched. Sitting on a chair outside the principal’s office was Sam. Her head was down as if she were studying her hands that were folded in her lap. What the hell? Jess thought. Then the office door opened. Sam stood and entered, the door closing behind her.

For the entire trip home, her mind raced. Why was Sam in the principal’s office? Did something happen at home? Had she gotten herself in trouble somehow? As she examined the various possibilities, she suddenly felt sick. Would she? Could she? Was Sam betraying her trust? Was she telling the principal about her and Jill? Jessica groaned. She didn’t want to believe that. Sam wasn’t a rat. Or so she hoped.

After the bus had disappeared, Jessica made her way down the street and around the corner to meet Jill at their rendezvous spot. But the area was lonely with no sign of life except for the sound of a dog barking somewhere in the distance. Jessica checked her watch. She was on time. Where was Jill? Something must have held her up at school. Jessica felt uneasy, and she shivered as a cool breeze blew. For the next forty-five minutes, she paced back and forth along the same ten cement slabs of sidewalk, glancing down the street with every turn hoping to see a familiar car approaching.

Cold and tired of pacing, Jessica sighed and turned back toward home. She needed to get back if she wanted to get her chores done before her parents got home. As she began to walk, she heard a horn honk behind her. Spinning around, she recognized Jill’s car.

Jessica raced to the passenger door after the car pulled to the curb, and climbed inside. Looking at Jill, she instantly knew something bad had happened. Jill sat still, hands on the wheel and looking forward.

“Jill?” Jess asked shakily.

The woman didn’t move. Her bottom lip quivered, and her eyes welled.

“Jill, please talk to me. What happened?”

When Jill turned to face her, it was clear that she had been crying for a while. She looked at Jessica with puffy red eyes and tear-stained cheeks.

“We can’t see each other anymore, Jess.” Her voice caught as she fought to keep control.

“What! Why?” Jessica felt sick. Her own tears began to flow.

“They know, Jess. They know.” Jill bit her lip, sniffing and wiping at her face.

“No. That’s not possible. How could they know? We were so careful!” Jessica’s voice raised an octave as she spoke, fear and panic in her voice.

“They do, Jess. I’m sorry.”

Jill pulled Jessica into an embrace and held her for a moment. “They’ve put me on administrative leave for the rest of the school year. Next September, I start working at a different school in another city.” She had calmed herself enough to explain it clearly.

“That’s not fair. They can’t make you move away!” she shouted.

“Jess, honey. They are doing me, and in a way, you, a favor.”

Jill paused for a moment. “I do this, and there are no police, your family doesn’t find out, and there are no reporters asking you and your family embarrassing questions… and I don’t go to prison.”

Jess gave her a meek smile. The woman was right. This was the best thing for both of them. But still, no Jill. No lover.

Jessica sobbed hard into Jill’s shoulder. After a few minutes, she pulled from the embrace and looked at her teacher. “Will I ever see you again?” she asked, already knowing the answer.

Jill shook her head. “No, I don’t think so, sweetheart.”

“I’m going to miss you so much,” Jessica said, trying to keep from crying again. “I love being with you.”

“And I will miss you, and I will never ever forget what we shared,” Jill smiled, brushing the girl’s cheek with the back of her hand. Then she pulled her in close and kissed her deeply.

Jessica felt the passion as they kissed, wishing she could stay like this forever. Breaking the kiss, Jill looked at her and smiled. “You better get going, Jess. Your folks will be home soon.”

As Jessica started to open the car door, she stopped and turned to Jill. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Jessica crawled back over to Jill and gave her another kiss before getting out of the car. She watched Jill dive away as she began her walk home. She was hurting, heartbroken. She needed someone to blame. Who? Who could have turned them in? As far as Jessica knew, there was only one other person who knew their secret. Sam.

Jessica didn’t want to believe it. Sam was her best friend. She trusted her. And why would she do that? It didn’t make any sense. However, she had seen Sam go into the principal’s office, and right afterward Jill broke up with her. That had to be the reason. Sam had ratted on them.

When Jessica reached her house, she turned and walked up the driveway toward the front door. Reaching the door, she pulled a key from her pocket and unlocked it. She was just about to push the door open when she heard her name being called. Turning, she saw Sam jogging up the sidewalk toward her.

Not moving, she waited until Sam came to a stop only a few feet from her. Jessica felt disappointed and betrayed by her friend. Why was she here? To gloat?

“Jess. I want to apo…”

Jessica cut her off. “She’s gone, Sam. I hope you’re happy,” she said folding her arms across her chest.

Sam’s eyes widened. “What? Who’s gone? What are you…”

Jessica cut her off again. “Yeah. As if you don’t know.” She paused, glaring at Sam. “Jill is gone. That’s who. She was forced to go on leave for the rest of the school year and then work at a school in another city next year.”

“But, Jess, I didn’t…”

“The only other person who knew about us was you, Sam. I saw you go into the principal’s office today. Next thing I know, Jill is ending it with me. You told the principal about us, didn’t you?!” Tears were flowing again.

“No, Jess, I didn’t. I wouldn’t,” Sam stammered, her own tears running down her cheeks.

Jessica shook her head. “I wish I could believe you.”

She turned toward the front door and opened it. Stepping inside, she looked back at Sam. “Goodbye.” Then she closed the door.

*****

Jessica was miserable. She had lost both the woman she loved and her best friend. Forcing herself to put one foot in front of the other, she made her way up the walk to the school building, and inside.

She heard a woman’s voice call her name. “Jessica.”

Jessica looked at the direction of the voice and saw her principal, Ms. Jenkins, standing at the doorway to the main office. She couldn’t read the woman’s expression, and it wasn’t making her feel any better.

“I would like to speak to you for a moment please.”

Her heart racing, Jess made her way to Ms. Jenkins. This had to be about Jill. What else could it be? Ms. Jenkins led her into her office and motioned for her to have a seat. Closing the door, she moved around behind the desk and sat in her chair.

“It’s okay, Jessica. You’re not in trouble or anything,” she said softly, sensing Jessica’s nervousness.

Jessica tried to relax, but it was difficult. Being summoned to the principal’s office isn’t usually a good thing.

“I wanted to talk to you about Ms. Lessel, Jill.”

Jessica swallowed hard. She was sure Ms. Jenkins knew everything. “Okay.”

“I need to know for sure that what happened between the two of you was consensual. That you were a willing participant, and not forced.” Her tone was serious. She leaned slightly forward, hands folded on her desk.

Jessica nodded. Her stomach flip-flopped. “Yes. I wanted to.”

“Good. That’s what I was hoping to hear,” she said, pushing back and smiling.

Jessica was confused. It was almost if Ms. Jenkins was okay with what they had done. “What do you mean?”

“Don’t get me wrong, Jessica. What happened between you two was very dangerous. Had I been anyone else, Jill would probably be in jail right now. And the lives of you and your family would be in turmoil. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“I do,” Jessica said. “Sam tried to warn me about what could happen. But… I don’t understand why Sam would tell you about us if she knew the problems that would cause.”

Ms. Jenkins raised an eyebrow. “Sam? Sam who?”

“My friend, Samantha Landry. She was in your office yesterday. She told you about Jill and me.”

Smiling, Ms. Jenkins glanced at a student file that was open on her desk. A photo of Sam was attached to the flyleaf. “She did no such thing, Jessica. Samantha was in here because she had, for lack of a better term, defended your honor behind the school yesterday.”

It was Jessica’s turn to look confused. “What? Defended my honor?”

“Why, yes. She wouldn’t give me all the details,” Ms. Jenkins began to explain, “but it seems that Becky Wilson said some very unflattering things about you, so Samantha shut her up. With a fist to her face. Broke Becky’s nose and gave her one heck of a shiner.”

Ms. Jenkins chuckled, closing the folder and placing it in her out basket. “As much as I think Becky deserved what she got — and you didn’t hear that from me — I had to punish Samantha with a week’s suspension. That was why you saw her here.”

Jessica was shocked. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Sam had punched out Becky for saying something bad about her. Jessica suddenly felt sick. She had falsely accused Sam of betraying her when she was, in fact, defending her.

“Are you okay?” Ms. Jenkins asked, seeing the color drain from Jessica’s face. “You look ill.”

Jessica groaned. “Sam and I fought the other day when I told her about Jill and me. We hadn’t spoken again until yesterday when I blamed her for telling you about us. Oh god, what have I done.” She put her head in her hands.

Ms. Jenkins came around the desk and sat in a chair beside Jessica, placing a hand on her shoulder.

“You will need to talk to her then, let her know you screwed up. I’m fairly sure she will forgive you. She cares about you very much. Probably more than you realize,” Ms. Jenkins said in a soothing voice.

Jess looked up at Ms. Jenkins and saw a reassuring smile on her face. She decided right then she would go to Sam’s house after school and apologize. Hopefully, Sam would be willing to talk to her. Jessica had to wonder, though… if Sam hadn’t told on them, who had?

“If it wasn’t Sam, then how did you find out?” she asked.

“Jill told me.”

Jessica felt like she just got a punch in the stomach. Jill told her? Why would she do that? Why would she take such a risk?

“I don’t understand. Why would she do that?” Jessica asked. “And why didn’t you call the cops?” she added as an afterthought.

Ms. Jenkins paused and studied Jessica’s face. When she spoke again, her tone was serious. “Jessica, if I tell you… if you care about Jill, you’ll have to promise me that what I say will never leave this room.”

Jessica nodded. “Yes. Of course. I promise.” She felt anxious, wondering what could be so secretive.

Ms. Jenkins stood long enough to get her cup of coffee from her desk, then sat back down. Taking a sip, she began to speak. “If it had been any other teacher, I might have called the cops. But I didn’t with Jill, because… we used to be lovers.” She paused for a moment letting that sink in. “When I was her high school teacher.”

Jessica stared at her wide-eyed. “Wow,” was all she could say.

“So, I could understand what she was going through. The thrill of being with you, and the ever-present fear of getting caught. It was tearing at her, eating her up inside. It was that fear that had brought her to see me yesterday and confess what was going on.”

“So, nobody knew about us before she told you?”

“Not as far as I’m aware. Except for Sam, who you told,” Ms. Jenkins said. “Jill cares about you, and she didn’t want to hurt you. She was afraid that just trying to break it off wouldn’t work. The temptation would be too great for one or both of you to try and get together again. She knew that if she told me, I would have to do something. Because if I didn’t, and somewhere down the road your romance got out, then my ass would be in a sling too.”

“I wish she had talked to me about it first. We could have worked something out,” said Jessica, wiping at a tear.

“Maybe so,” Ms. nodded, “but I don’t think she wanted to take that risk. Because of our relationship, she knew it was safe to confide in me, and we could figure a way out, so-to-speak. The paperwork will show that her administrative leave and subsequent transfer to another school will be because of illness in the family.”

Jessica sat and stared at her hands, folded on her lap. Jill had chosen to leave her. Not only break up, but physically leave. Why didn’t she tell her about this plan? Was she really afraid to? Was she just trying to protect her?

Then there was Sam. Jessica had hurt Sam, and may have destroyed their friendship. Maybe, hopefully, Ms. Jenkins was right, and Sam would be able to forgive her. She could only hope.

When Ms. Jenkins and Jessica had finished their discussion, Jessica headed for her locker, and then to start her day of school. She was feeling a bit better than she had when she’d arrived, but her thoughts were occupied by the revelations from her meeting with the principal.

The day ended, and Jessica took the bus home. She sat alone in the same seat she always sat in, wishing that Sam was there beside her. Hopefully, she thought, she will be again soon. Jessica got off the bus at the stop before hers, and soon was standing at the front door of Sam’s house. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she knocked on the door.

The door opened after several moments, and Jessica was greeted by Mrs. Landry.

“Jessica, hello,” she chirped. “It’s good to see you. Please come in.”

“Hi. Thanks,” Jessica replied. “Is Sam home?”

“Yes, she’s in her room,” the woman said. “She’s been a mess since your fight. She misses you terribly. But, don’t tell her I said that,” she added with a laugh.

Jessica gave a weak smile. “I’ve missed her too. And it’s been all my fault. I really hope she’ll forgive me.”

Mrs. Landry smiled sympathetically and gave Jessica a hug. “I’m sure you two will work it out. You’ve been friends for far too long to throw it away so easily. Now go on. Make up with her.”

Kicking off her sneakers and setting her backpack down, she headed up the stairs to Sam’s room. Taking another deep breath, she knocked on the bedroom door.

“It’s open,” a voice said from inside the room.

Jessica opened the door and stepped inside. “Hi,” she said shyly.

She waited, looking at Sam who had her back to her as she sat in front of her computer. Jessica braced for the worst as Sam’s chair spun around at the sound of her voice.

Sam stood, a broad smile on her face. That smile. So genuine. Relief washed over Jessica. All wasn’t lost.

“Jess!” she yelled excitedly. With three large steps, she covered the distance between them. “I’m so happy to see you. I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you or —”

Jessica cut her off. “Sam, please, stop. It’s me who should be apologizing, not you.”

She took Sam into her arms and held her quietly for a moment. “I’m the one who is sorry. I thought you were jealous or something. I got so mad at you for just trying to be my friend, for trying to save me from myself.”

Jessica let go of the embrace and closed the bedroom door. She led Sam over to the bed, and they sat on the edge.

“You were right. Everything you tried to tell me was true, and it almost happened. Then I accused you of telling the principal about Jill and me. I am so very sorry, Sam,” Jessica said, her eyes welling. “I was such an asshole. Can you ever forgive me?”

“Of course I can. You’re my best friend, and I love you.” Sam took Jessica’s hand in hers, rubbing her knuckles with her thumb. “To be honest, I was a bit jealous of Jill.”

Jessica looked at her friend. “Because I was spending more time with her than you?”

“Sorta.” Sam leaned over and lightly pressed her lips to Jessica’s, lingering there.

“But more,” Sam said shyly as she pulled her mouth away, “because she was kissing you, and I wasn’t.”

“Sam? What are you saying?” Jessica asked, looking down at the thumb rubbing her hand, and then into the big brown eyes that were smiling just as much as Sam’s mouth was.

Samantha sighed, “I guess I didn’t really realize how I felt until you told me you had sex with her. Or I didn’t want to admit it. I don’t know. All I know is that the thought of you with her hurt so much. I tried to tell myself it was just petty jealousy, but I knew it really wasn’t, not all of it anyway.”

“Sam, I don’t know what to say. I mean…”

Shaking her head, Sam smiled and placed a finger on Jessica’s lips. “It’s okay. You don’t need to say anything, Jess.” She paused for a second or two. “Back when we used to practice kissing, I loved it. Holding you that way and kissing you. When it was over, I told myself that what I’d felt was just part of the experience and didn’t mean anything. Same as when we sometimes masturbate together under the covers. The thought of you touching yourself really excites me and it always makes me want to touch you. But again, I would just chalk it up to the moment and nothing else.”

Sam paused and looked over Jessica’s shoulder at a spot on the wall as she collected her thoughts. “Even you having the hots for Jill bothered me, but I figured a relationship between you two wouldn’t really go anywhere, so I pushed it aside. But it did get me wondering why I felt that way.”

Jess was stunned by the confession. Had Sam just came out to her? Holy crap! Although Jessica did find Sam attractive, she had accepted the fact — until now, anyway — that Sam was straight. Nothing more than their schoolgirl kissing practice and occasional masturbation sessions under the comforter during sleepovers was all that would ever happen between them. Or so she’d thought.

Samantha continued, “When you told me you were having sex with her, it made me… well, ill. I thought I might actually lose you. So, I talked to Mom about what I was feeling, and she helped me realize that what I felt for you might be more than just friendship.”

“You told her about Jill and me?” Jessica asked, a twinge of panic racing through her.

“No, silly,” Sam giggled. “I just told her you were very interested in someone, and how that made me feel.” Taking Jessica’s hand in hers, Sam looked into her eyes. “When I said I loved you, I meant it, Jess. But, I mean, it’s okay if you don’t feel the same way. If all you want is to be friends, that’s okay too. I just need you in back in my life.”

Jessica was overwhelmed with the thoughts and emotions that swirled through her. She sat and stared dumbfounded at her friend. She loves me? As in, loves me loves me?  This was wonderful, and scary and… damn. Jill had only been out of her life for one day. Was she ready to begin a new relationship this soon? If she was to start a new relationship, exploring one with Sam certainly wouldn’t be out of the question.

A tear rolled down Jessica’s cheek. Before she could wipe it away, Sam’s thumb did. Jessica looked closely into Sam’s eyes. Slowly, she leaned in until their lips touched. Closing her eyes, she enjoyed the sensation of Sam’s mouth against hers. Jessica pushed her lips a little harder against Sam’s when she felt her moan vibrate against her mouth. Bringing her hands up to Sam’s shoulders, she held her. Jessica felt a warmth run through her starting deep down inside.

Sam whimpered when Jessica ended the kiss. “That was nice,” Sam said dreamily.

Chuckling, Jessica said, “The least I can do for my knight in, um… torn blue jeans.”

“Huh?”

“Ms. Jenkins told me about your chivalrous act,” Jessica snorted. “Broke Becky’s nose for me. I’m honored.” She winked at her friend.

“The bitch had it coming,” Sam grunted.

“So, I heard.” Jessica paused. “But, Sam, Ms. Jenkins also said that Jill was the one who told on us.”

Sam looked at her in surprise. “What?!”

Jessica nodded and gave her the abridged version of the conversation she’d had with the principal. Then she picked up Sam’s hand and kissed her palm. “I had feelings for Jill, and I enjoyed being with her,” she said, rubbing Sam’s palm. “But I am realizing now that it probably never would have lasted. Also, I’m kind of miffed at the way she ended it and just left town.”

“I can understand that,” Sam said softly.

“You said earlier that you wanted me back in your life,” said Jessica. “Sam, I never left it. I have missed you so much, but my stupid pride wouldn’t allow me to admit I was wrong. I thought I might have lost the most important person in my life. You.”

Tears flowed down Sam’s cheeks again. “Jess,” she blubbered.

Jessica pulled Sam into an embrace, and they rocked together, both giggling and crying, for several minutes before Jessica spoke again. “Sam, you are my best friend, and I love you so much.”

“I hear a but coming,” Sam said, as her chin dipped to her chest.

“And I would like to explore a relationship with you. But I need some time. Could you just be my friend right now?” Jessica asked.

Sam raised her head and smiled brightly. “Of course, Jess. I’m always here for you, no matter what.”

They both sniffed and giggled and wiped tears from their faces before falling into each other’s arms again.

“You know,” Jessica said seductively as she rubbed Sam’s back. “There’s no reason why we can’t continue our kissing practice.”

Sam froze. “Really?”

Jess shrugged. “Sure. If you want to, that is.”

Sam giggled. “I do,” she said enthusiastically. “And, um, what about… you know…”

A flash of excitement raced through Jessica. “What?” she asked playfully.

“Um… during sleepovers, under the covers. Sexy movies,” Sam whispered into Jessica’s ear.

“Really, Sam? You can swear like a drunken sailor, but you can’t say masturbate?”

Jessica could feel the heat grow in the ear that Sam had resting against her neck.

“Fine,” Sam said with an exaggerated sigh. “Can we masturbate together still?”

“If you promise to keep your hands to yourself. I know how you newbie lesbians can be,” Jessica chuckled and was rewarded with a slap on the butt.

“Not funny, Jess. I’m in a vulnerable state right now, and you should be sympathetic to my needs.”

Jessica pulled back from the embrace and eyed her friend. “You just came out to me, Sam. It’s not like you’re pregnant,” she snorted.

Sam laughed and then put a hand behind Jessica’s head and pulled her close and kissed her. As their mouths moved together, Jessica pushed her tongue forward and searched. She wrapped her arms around her friend as Sam did the same. Their tongues danced and swirled, and they fell together back onto the bed. Lost in the kiss, they didn’t hear the knock on the door.

“Oh my,” said Mrs. Landry, bringing a hand to her mouth, “I’m sorry, girls.”

The pair broke the kiss and sat up.

“Mom!” Sam exclaimed. “We were… I mean… um…”

“It’s okay, sweetheart. I guess you didn’t hear me knock,” said her mother with a grin. “It was so quiet up here, I was beginning to think you might have killed each other. Happy to see you didn’t.”

The girls laughed.

“Nope. No homicides,” Sam giggled. “Besides, I don’t know how I could have gotten the body out of the house without you noticing.”

“All right. So, I guess it goes without saying that you’ve made up. I’m glad it all worked out.”

Mrs. Landry stepped into the hall, then paused. “And Samantha, next time you two want to say you’re sorry, please lock your bedroom door.” Leaving the two girls red-faced and speechless, she closed the door.

  1. Barbara says:

Wow that was a plot twist. I hope that Jill comes back into the story but if not that will be okay.

I can’t wait to see how Sam and Jess develop their relationship.

  2. kim says:

Really a lot going on. So bittersweet. we are looking forward to the next chapter, great job.

  3. Alyssa says:

    Just loving this story:)

  4. Sarah says:

    Very fun.

  5. No One says:

Well, that was quite the rollercoaster. I thought Sam might get involved eventually, but I didn’t see events turning out this way. Very dramatic.

I think Jill is a shitty person for acting this way, to be honest. Yes, that kind of relationship is very dangerous and probably wouldn’t work out… That’s why you think hard about that *beforehand* and don’t do it. What you definitely shouldn’t do is pretend to start a relationship then bail out once you got what you wanted out of it. She couldn’t even face Jess and tell her the truth herself.

So good riddance, Jess is better off with Sam. I hope that works out for them. It was interesting to discover a vulnerable side to Sam, quite different from her snarky usual self. I think they make a cute couple.

I wonder what that cheerleader had said about Jess, though. Something about her and Jill, I guess? Since someone saw them come out of the bathroom together…

Anyway, a really good, emotional chapter. Sometimes you need chapters that don’t focus on sex to make the story move forward and make it more interesting. It *could* maybe have used more steamy details when Jess thinks back on the fun they had in Jill’s SUV to make up for the lack an actual sex scene, though… 😉

Just found this great story Amanda, and I’m loving it.

So many options for the last chapter.

    Will Jill make a reappearance?

Sam and Jess’s relationship becoming sexual!

    The cheerleader?

    Even Ms Jenkins!

Can’t wait to see how it develops!!!

  8. Euphrosyne, Thalia & Aglaia says:

    Wow! I’m almost speechless!

such a great chapter. I agree with most of the other readers. I loved the “roller coaster” ride, as No One put it, it was dramatic and pulled me in to the story and I was feeling forlorn as Jess was and then so relieved & happy as Sam was near the end, and as reader kim commented, so bittersweet!

Really great writing Amanda, enthralling and exciting and realistic…so well done!
on to the last chapter with Great Expectations 🙂

  9. David says:

Another great chapter, I love the why you write and keep the story line going, even without sex. So many ways this could of gone and you had my complete attention to the end. I loved the twist with the principal and Jill, was even wondering if she was going to hit on Jess. I love how Jess and Sam made up and may have a future together and that her mom seems okay with it. On to Chapter 4 to see what happens next. Thanks Amanda, I love your work.
